The advice service
KYC's advice centre provides specialist support and advocacy service to young people age 13 - 25. Our friendly teams of advisors offer advice, guidance and support to young people across Brent, Camden, Westminster and other central London boroughs. The Advice Centre has been one of the busiest parts of KYC and has seen many changes for this service area. On average during busy months of the year, i.e. summer, Christmas, etc., we see over 120 young people per month.
We work to a client centred approach, one that looks at the young person in their entirety and not simply at the problem that they present with. It is a holistic approach, recognising that many factors impact upon a young person's ability to make positive changes within their lives - factors such as discrimination, poverty, poor housing and a lack of educational opportunity.
We work extensively with other agencies across North West London including both statutory and voluntary sector workers, and we adopt a multi agency approach to working with young people, liaising with co-workers across many disciplines and fields to ensure that the needs of young people are being met and that services being offered to them are being co-ordinated. We have a variety of other workers who we work together with such as Fairbridge in London, Vital Regeneration Media Project who run a weekly session from our centre called Seriously Creative and our health workers who run sexual health training sessions with Peer Educators.
We have continued our efforts to extend our Community Legal Services Quality Mark from general help, to general help with casework in five areas; young people, students, debt, welfare benefits and housing.
We have continued our work with the local Job Centres, housing and social services departments, in addition to the work we do with wide ranging voluntary sector organisations. We are committed to continue working with other agencies to improve the lives of young people in North West London, not just the young people accessing our service.
A vital part of our role is the support that we offer to other professionals working with young people. We are always available to those professionals looking for advice on problems that they are having.
